You Have to Fight for It

It’s crazy that I arrived to edit this document by telling myself, “lean in.”  That’s another way of saying get on the other side of fear. Fight the resistance.  Do it anyway! And here I am writing an article about fighting for “it.”

“It” is a not very coincidental commonality I found between two feminist shows, “Cable Girls” and “Glow.” We haven’t talked about «Glow» very much on this blog. It stands for Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling. I definitely recommend it if you’re in the mood for an 80’s women’s empowerment moment. Both of the lead female characters said they had to fight for “it.”

We can infer this means try your best to achieve whatever you want. Do not allow anyone or anything to keep you from “it.” In “Glow” although the finale for the third season was not as good as previous seasons because it focused less on wrestling, the message was still important. The show is more than women wrestling in the 80s.  We’re watching their lives unfold as they’re trying to make it in Hollywood. The season’s lack of wrestling emphasized the complacency and boredom the women felt with their show, life direction, and career. The finale concluded with the idea that they’re all looking to chase their own dreams rather than wrestle.

«I love my dream too much to try any one else’s.»

Ruth to Debbie, «Glow» Season 3

That was the “it.”  A dream, love for the dream, and an unwillingness to give «it» up.  Letting “it” go means to give into fear. Please be encouraged to chase after your dreams because giving into fear makes you a lot more miserable than the happiness on the other side.

In «Cable Girls» the women were fighting for the ability to live freely. Their dream was to work without guilt, have equal power in society, become educated, and empower other women. They were willing to achieve their dream at any cost like the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling.

I think that’s an important message for women because we are often raised to think we cannot. We habitually think how we will be perceived, to ask for permission, and we simply can not do it. These shows are good encouragement for us to remember that we need to tell ourselves we are capable of all things more often.

Women can fight for «it» alone and together, no matter what.
